Sojourner Truth, from "We are the fabric"
Sojourner Truth, from "We are the fabric"
Archival high quality print of original artwork, on Hahnemuhle rag paper with white border, 11 x 11 in, edition of 100, signed reproduction
This piece was created to commemorate Sojourner Truth, on the anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment which gave some-but not all- American women the right to vote. For some women at the time, suffrage was inextricably linked to abolition; but that didn’t become central to the suffrage platform. While making the piece, I knew that Sojourner Truth had to be in the middle of the composition and that she would be surrounded by trees full of life. I wanted to show the trees in a way that signaled the continual work of transforming loss into life, conscious of the history of lynchings in the U.S.
